Being the Adult

One of the hardest things about being a freelancer/entrepreneur is just plain getting the work done. Not having set work hours means you have to keep on top of them yourself. It’s very easy to putter away your time doing any number of things that don’t count as work and leave you wondering just where the hell the week went.

Being the Adult

We’ve all had days like this.

When you’re on deadline, this usually isn’t that hard. Or when it’s work that shouldn’t even count as work (i.e., the fun bits). Then it’s easy to get motivated and you don’t want to quit. But when it’s the work part of work, or the work is just a deadline-free bunch of “oh I should do thats.” —  That’s what it’s harder to want to put the hours in.

So we use productivity tricks, set rules, maybe use lifehacks, and then remind ourselves of what we’re working towards to help get us motivated. We find ways to put in the work hours so we’re not just marathoning our weeks away with Buffy the Vampire Slayer, My Little Pony, or Farscape. There’s no managers or parents or teachers looking over your shoulder. It’s all on us.

And yes, that sometimes means turning down an invitation we really wish we could accept because we need to get the work hours in. Sigh. It probably won’t be the last time.

Being the adult is tough.
